Zendoodling the Sun

This project did not start out well.

I had the initial idea over Mother’s Day Weekend, which was just a bad weekend artistically. I was utterly convinced I had no more ideas, no talent, I might as well close up shop (yes, I was being overly dramatic). But one thing I’ve learned is to just keep going, to see how an idea might play out.

I knew exactly how I wanted the calligraphy to look. The rest of it was built from there.

Originally I wanted a Celtic knot in the middle of the sun but it didn’t turn out at all, so I covered it all up.

With some of the layout done.

Here I was mainly testing out the ideas I had in my head to see if they would actually work.

I decided I didn't want any white space in the center and so I tried out some new doodling patterns.

At this point I knew this project was a go and I got really excited about adding color.

The part where you decide on colors and how they should flow is my absolute favorite part.

After getting my color pattern set the hard part began. If you’ve ever colored in a zendoodle you’ll know what I’m talking about (or maybe not, if that’s what you love doing): there are so many little nooks and crannies that need to be filled in. I don’t NOT enjoy doing it, it just isn’t the most exciting bit.

And the finished product.
And the finished product.

Aaaand it’s done. It turned out better than I thought it would, good enough that Himself and I have commented that it’s our first “gallery” piece, which is exciting to think about. It’s 11×14″, so it’s not really big enough to be a focal piece, but I think it could definitely have it’s place in my future studio/gallery (which could happen next year, there is an amazing mall-type building with nothing but artist’s studios and galleries).

I plan on making prints of this piece and putting those up for sale, both here in The Wordsremember Shop and possibly over in my Etsy shop as well. We found a local shop that does artistic printing and I want to see if their product is as good (or maybe better!) than the Giclee prints I ordered of The AzmayanIf you are interested in a print email me at wordsandwares@gmail.com (and that goes for any of my works).

I used a mix of Micron pens, Faber-Castell, and acrylic liquid paints (see list below, affiliate links are included, I buy a lot of art products).
